Robin Kalus is a German-born writer and director based in Sydney. He holds a Master's degree in Directing from the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Media Management from RH Cologne.
During his almost ten years in the industry, Robin has worked in a number of different capacities across several disciplines on productions of all shapes and sizes. After starting his career as a cameraman and editor for major German television network WDR, he relocated to Auckland, New Zealand, where he freelanced in the domestic film industry on productions such as Amazon Studios' THE WILDS (2020). Upon returning to Germany, he began working as an assistant director in both film and television while also producing and directing his short thriller POPPED (2022) which premiered at the 2022 New York City Independent Film Festival.
While at AFTRS, Robin wrote and directed several short films. In 2024, his short film concept BOY ON THE ROOF was a finalist at the 2024 AACTA Pitch: Focus, where it received praise for its bold genre blend of coming-of-age drama and magical realism. Shortly after, his graduation film FRACTURE (2025) was picked up for active distribution, premiering domestically at CinefestOZ 2025 and internationally at BAFTA-qualifying Aesthetica 2025 in York, UK.
As a filmmaker, Robin is interested in stories that explore existentialist themes centred around questions of identity and self-discovery in the context of complex human relationships, using formalist techniques and raw, explorative performances. He currently works as a freelance director, dramaturg and script supervisor on short films, vertical drama series and product commercials, as well as as an editor specialising in online and social media content.
As of 2025, he is in development on a feature film and several short-form projects.
